Dave Grohl is still struggling with the passing of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. “That event turned our world upside down,” the group’s frontman tells British music magazine MOJO.

It is the first time since Hawkins’ death in 2022 that Grohl has spoken more extensively about the loss. “It made me question everything in life, because it was so unfair,” he says. “I still find it hard to comprehend.”

Hawkins died of cardiac arrest at the age of fifty. The drummer had been with Foo Fighters, the band founded a few years earlier, since 1997.

Grohl processed Hawkins’ sudden death by making music. He did the same in 1995 following the death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. That led to Foo Fighters’ debut album at the time. “We realized we had to do this, because it had saved us before.”

However, there were no plans for a new album at that time. After a year, “forty or fifty instrumental tracks” were on the shelf, and Grohl discovered a series of eight recordings that felt powerful, fast, and energetic. “That is what we need,” Grohl said at the time.

The album Your Favorite Toy will be released on April 24.
