A guitar belonging to Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour has been auctioned for a record sum of over 14.5 million dollars (approximately 12.6 million euros). The previous record stood at 6 million dollars for a guitar owned by Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain.

Gilmour purchased the black Fender Stratocaster in New York in 1970. The instrument was slightly damaged, featuring some scratches and worn lacquer. According to auction house Christie’s, it was Gilmour’s favorite instrument.

The guitarist used the guitar for every Pink Floyd recording and live performance from 1972 through 1983. The instrument was used on albums such as The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), The Wall (1979), and The Final Cut (1983). The guitar can also be heard on Pink Floyd’s last album, The Endless River, from 2014.

The guitar, also known as ‘The Black Strat’, was part of an auction of the collection of American billionaire Jim Irsay, who passed away last year.

According to Guitar Magazine, Irsay had the largest collection of guitars in the world, including instruments played by Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Prince, and Bob Dylan.

He had purchased Gilmour’s guitar in 2019 for over 5 million dollars.

In addition to Gilmour’s guitar, the one belonging to Kurt Cobain from the music video for Smells Like Teen Spirit was also auctioned. That guitar went under the hammer for 6.9 million dollars. That was a record amount for a guitar owned by the Nirvana frontman, who died in 1994.
