British singer Lola Young is grateful that she hit rock bottom due to her cocaine addiction. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the singer explains that this moment helped her seek help and eventually perform again.
Last summer, Young collapsed during a performance at the All Things Go Music Festival in New York. Footage of the incident went viral, and three days later she canceled her tour.
“I’m taking a break,” she announced on Instagram a week later. “It hurts, but I have to cancel everything indefinitely. Thanks for all the love and support.”
She spent two months in a clinic without contact with the outside world. During that time, she learned that her single “Messy” had been nominated for a Grammy in the categories of Best New Artist and Best Pop Solo Performance. Young says the treatment was holistic, with an emphasis on therapy.
She currently attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and has a sponsor guiding her.
Her attitude towards work has changed. “It really helped me to mentally slow down and take time to process things,” the singer says. “Days off are important. Spending time with friends and people who love you.”
Regarding the criticism after canceling shows, she says: “There was a lot of hate, but it didn’t matter to me. It was a decision I had to make. What else could I have done? Die?”
Regarding the video of her breakdown that went viral, Young says: “I’ve seen it once or twice, but I’m not going to look for it. Still, I am grateful that it happened.
It was a breaking point that allows me to be better for my fans, better for my future, and better for myself.”
