Julio Iglesias is taking legal action over statements made by Yolanda Díaz, the Spanish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Employment. According to the Spanish singer, who has been accused of sexual abuse, Díaz posted defamatory statements on the social media platform Bluesky.

In the posts, the Spanish Deputy Prime Minister referred to “chilling testimonies from Julio Iglesias’ former associates.”

Díaz also referred to “sexual abuse and a situation of slavery with a power structure based on permanent aggression.” She also thanked “the courageous women and journalists for exposing the situation.”

According to Iglesias’ lawyer, Díaz wrongly assigned the women “the status of ‘victims’ of unproven facts.” In doing so, Díaz wrongly portrayed the singer as a suspect, the lawyer argues.

The Deputy Prime Minister responded to Iglesias’ legal action through Bluesky. “I defend working women against anyone who violates their integrity and their rights, and I will not stop doing so,” she wrote. “With or without lawsuits, women will no longer remain silent.”

Accusations of Sexual Abuse

Eighty-two-year-old Iglesias was accused of sexual abuse and human trafficking earlier this year. Two young women from the Dominican Republic alleged that the singer raped them in 2021 while they were working for him in his Caribbean villas.

Iglesias, for his part, denied everything. He called the accusations “absolutely false” and said he had never “abused, coerced, or disrespected a woman.”

Last month, it was announced that Spanish authorities will not initiate a case against Iglesias.

This is because the alleged abuse did not take place in Spain and the alleged victims live abroad.
