Phil Collins now has a nurse at his disposal 24 hours a day. This is due to the health problems the singer has been struggling with for years, the 74-year-old Collins explains in a rare interview with Zoe Ball for the BBC podcast Eras.

The former Genesis frontman last performed in 2022 after suffering permanent nerve damage, hearing problems, and a persistent knee injury, among other things.

According to the singer, it’s still “an ongoing process.” “I have a nurse at home 24 hours a day to make sure I take my medication.”

Collins says that “everything that could go wrong” did go wrong. He contracted COVID-19 in the hospital, had kidney problems, and had to undergo five knee surgeries.

He now has a working knee again. “I can walk, albeit with assistance, like crutches.”

The singer also admits that he also had a drinking problem for a while, which affected his kidneys. “I was never drunk, but I did fall a few times.

It’s just one of those things that happened, and it eventually caught up with me, and I ended up spending months in the hospital.”

In his 2016 memoir, Not Dead Yet, Collins wrote that his drinking had reached such a point that he ended up in intensive care.

The interview with Collins will air on January 26, the singer announced on Instagram.
