Singer David Coverdale of the band Whitesnake is retiring. The 74-year-old Coverdale, who first gained fame as the lead singer of Deep Purple, announced his departure in a message on Instagram.

“In recent years, it has become very clear to me that it’s time to put away my rock ’n’ roll shoes and tight jeans,” he wrote. “It has been an incredible journey of more than fifty years.”

Coverdale rose to fame in the 1970s as the lead singer of Deep Purple. In 1978, the British singer founded the band Whitesnake. Major success followed with the 1987 album Whitesnake, which included the hits Here I Go Again and Is This Love.

In 2016, Coverdale was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the world-famous music museum in Ohio.

Over the course of his career, he has sold more than 40 million records with his various bands.
